Our Library combines both a city and school library.

Our Librarians feel that the library has a huge impact on our school and community.  The teachers, students, and public are fortunate to have a library of this size and capacity.  We have many volumes of needed materials in our books and by the use of our computers.

Because we have a combined community and school library, we have more books and resources.  The school benefits from the public library's books, while the public library benefits from the school's books.  Access to computers and internet is another asset to the community and to the school as well.

People who do not have access to a computer at home may use the computers in the library at any time.   Students not only come to the library to get information for assigned work, but also for pleasure.  The library has a wide selection to fit everyone's interest level.  We also keep books according to reading ability levels.

The library also hosts a free summer reading program for children.  In this program they read and do special activities.

GUIN EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES

The City of Guin school system includes one high school, one elementary school and a pre-school which is part of the Marion County School System. We also offer a private school which consists of a pre-school, elementary school and a high school. The elementary school was selected as an Alabama Reading Initiative Literacy Demonstration Site for the State of Alabama.

The system consistently receives high scores on their achievement tests and has a low teacher to student ratio. The system has no incidents with safety or discipline.

The one cent sales tax was put into place so that we can prepare our children for the increasingly competitive high tech global economy. The city is proud to have given over a million dollars to our schools. The students enjoy greater access to technology and the ability to enhance their skills in the math and science fields.

The system offers career-technical programs, advanced placement courses, and a dual enrollment program with Bevill State Community College.

Both Guin Elementary, and Marion County High School are a part of the Marion County School System and are accredited by the State and Southern Association of Schools. Both schools consistently score above the state average on achievement tests.  Test scores are also above system and state levels on the Sat-10 and the DIBLES test. The school now has a state of the art computer lab with a computer to student ratio of 3 to 1. The school received a grant last year to have a 4 year old pre-school program. It accommodates 18 students with one certified teacher and one paraprofessional teacher. Creative Curriculum (hands-on-approach) is used in this classroom.

Future growth in our high school is to incorporate a career-technical program starting in the 10th grade. The curriculum can be adapted to fit a company's needs. This program has been used successfully by Mercedes, Toyota and Honda. The school system is also committed to developing an International Baccalaureate Program.

The community is very supportive of the schools and, in 1998 passed a 1 cent sales tax for Guin Elementary and MCHS "It Makes Cents To Buy In Guin"

Marion County High School has been named by the governor to be an ACCESS School. ACCESS stands for Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators and Students Statewide. ACCESS is a distance learning classroom that will be able to deliver web-based, online courses with Interaction Videoconferencing to our students. We were one of the first hundred schools in the state that received this technology in our school and be able to receive and transmit courses. ACCESS distance learning provides courses such as Latin, Creative Writing, AP Calculus, AP U.S. History, AP Biology, Spanish, Physics, AP Calculus, and AP English. The ACCESS program is a great opportunity for our students, school, and the future of our state. For further information about the ACCESS program, go to http://www.accesssdl.state.al.us
